The new Greene County Sheriff's Office and Detention Center was constructed during 2009 and 2010 opening in January 2010. The new facility was a much needed upgrade from the previous jail which was originally constructed in 1935 and housed up to 22 male inmates, no females. The new facility has a 96 bed capacity and the ability to house females. The new facility also allows for extra bed spaces to be rented out through the State Misdemeanor Confinement Program, in which the state pays the county for housing inmates sentenced for misdemeanor crimes. The Detention Center also rents out bed space to neighboring counties. Both programs allow for the Detention Center to generate a revenue.
