Our responsibility to the community is to provide a safe and humane correctional center for roughly 1,300 Pretrial and convicted inmates. The Virginia Beach Correctional Center (VBCC) is designed to house inmates awaiting trial, inmates serving local sentences and convicted inmates awaiting transfer to a state penitentiary. Security is a top priority. Under the dictates of security and safety, all regulations of this jail are designed to promote efficiency, cooperation and safety. And, our duties extend beyond the day-to-day operations of the correctional center. The Virginia Beach Sheriff's Office also administers the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE Program), maintains security for 28 courts and serves more than 300,000 civil papers on an annual basis.
