about

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD) is responsible for law enforcement in unincorporated Los Angeles county and contracted cities. It is the largest sheriff's department in the United States. The Los Angeles county jail is where short-term incarceration for crimes committed in the county occur. LASD runs six detention facilities, several of which house more than one jail. The system is the largest county jail in the country, and incarcerates a total of around 200,000 inmates each year. Men's Central Jail houses about 5,000 high-security prisoners near the Central Jail Arraignment Court and the Twin Towers facility, including both sentenced and pre-trial prisoners. The Twin Towers facility that is located nearby also houses high-security prisoners. Most of the county's mental health inmates are located here in the Los Angeles County Medical Center jail ward. This area also houses inmates with certain medical conditions who require specialized care. Mira Loma Detention Center houses illegal immigrants waiting for their cases to be decided. It contracts with the U.S. Department of Immigrations and Customs to provide this service. Residents are referred to as detainees, and have similar rights and privileges as other jail inmates including access to libraries, outdoor yard time and religious programs. The North County Correctional Facility houses five separate jails in one facility. It is a maximum security facility that was specially designed to be functional. It has a high emphasis on vocational and educational training, as well as counseling services to help inmates prepare for a successful life after jail. The East Facility at Pitchess Detention Center is currently the oldest operating jail in the county. It was built in 1951 and houses parole violators waiting on hearings as well as other inmates. It is next door to the North Facility which is also located at the Pitchess Detention Center. Pitchess Detention Center's North Facility is a maximum security ward that houses inmates with low, medium and high-security needs. It features dormitory-style housing and disciplinary cells in each of its four modules. The former North Annex of the North Facility is now the South Facility at Pitchess. The Century Regional Detention Facility is the county women's jail. It is an all-female jail that transitioned to this status in 2006. Prior to this it housed two vocational training programs which are now located at the North Facility at the Pitchess Detention Center.
