about

Detention Division is primarily responsible for the safe and secure management of adult offenders housed in the Platte County Detention Center. The Platte County Detention Center is a modern 180-bed facility that houses local, state and federal detainees at various stages of the criminal justice process. The Detention Division is collaterally responsible for inmate medical care, food services and transportation. The first Platte County Jail was built in 1841 at a cost of $3,000. The construction is historically described as “a substantial log structure”. This jail was burned by Union forces during the Civil War in December 1861 and was not replaced until 1867. The 1867 facility was replaced in February 1910 and housed county prisoners until April 1979. In 1978, a new housing facility was built into the Platte County Courthouse as part of a historic restoration of that building. In August of 1998, the current facility was opened as part of the new Tom Thomas Law Enforcement Center. Including all services associated with Jail Operations, the Detention Division also staffs the Security Services Unit, which is responsible for the safety and security of the Platte County Government Complex including the Courthouse, Administrative Building, Juvenile Annex, and the Tom Thomas Law Enforcement Center. The Security Services Unit provides direct security for the Circuit Court Judges when the courts are in session. Captain King is also designated as the Commander over the Sheriff’s Office’s Defensive Tactics and Weapons Training Unit and the Sheriff’s Color Guard.
